Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

Fried Green Tomatoes are a Southern classic made with firm, tangy green tomatoes coated in a crispy cornmeal and breadcrumb mixture, then fried to golden perfection. They make a delicious appetizer or side dish with your favorite dipping sauce.

  • 4 large green tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Slice the tomatoes: Wash and dry the green tomatoes. Cut them into 1/2-inch thick slices.
  • Prepare the coating: In one bowl, mix the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. In a third bowl, combine the cornmeal and breadcrumbs.
  • Coat the tomato slices: First, dip each tomato slice into the flour mixture, shaking off any excess. Then dip it into the egg mixture, and finally coat it with the cornmeal and breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure it sticks.
  • Fry the tomatoes: Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the tomato slices in the skillet. Fry for about 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Remove and place on paper towels to drain any excess oil.
  • Serve: Serve the fried green tomatoes hot, with a side of ranch dressing, remoulade, or your favorite dipping sauce.
