Fajitas are a popular Mexican dish made with sizzling slices of marinated chicken, beef, or vegetables, sautéed with bell peppers and onions. Served with warm tortillas and a variety of fresh toppings, this dish is perfect for family dinners or casual gatherings.
- 500g (1 lb) chicken breast or beef steak, thinly sliced (or tofu for a vegetarian option)
- 2 bell peppers, sliced
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 8 flour tortillas
- Marinate the meat (or tofu): In a bowl, combine the olive oil, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Add the sliced chicken or beef (or tofu) and toss to coat evenly. Let it marinate for at least 10 minutes while you prepare the vegetables.
- Cook the meat and vegetables: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated meat and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fully cooked and browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add the sliced bell peppers and onions. Sauté the vegetables for 5-6 minutes until tender and slightly charred.
- Warm the tortillas: While the vegetables are cooking, warm the flour tortillas in a separate pan or in the oven wrapped in foil for a few minutes, or use a microwave.
- Assemble the fajitas: Place the cooked meat (or tofu) and vegetables onto each warmed tortilla. Add your favorite toppings like salsa, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, cilantro, or a squeeze of fresh lime.
- Serve: Serve the fajitas hot with all your favorite toppings and enjoy this flavorful and customizable Mexican dish!
